Learning guide
Which language learning app fits how you learn?
The right language learning app depends on what you need to do next. Starting a language, practising conversation and remembering words from a lesson are different jobs. You may benefit from more than one tool.
This guide is published by LanguageRecap, a personal vocabulary and spaced-repetition app. It explains our approach; it is not an independent ranking of the most popular apps.
Start with your learning goal, not a popularity list
- I want a course that tells me what to study
- Look for a guided language course with a sequence of lessons. Duolingo, for example, describes its approach as bite-sized lessons with game-like practice. Check the course available for your language and your current level.
- I want to use a language in conversation
- Look for opportunities to speak, receive feedback and understand real people. A teacher, tutor or language exchange can complement app-based study.
- I want to remember vocabulary from my own lessons
- Look for personal vocabulary practice with spaced repetition. LanguageRecap lets you bring lesson notes, choose suggested words and translations, and practise recalling the words over time.
What LanguageRecap does
LanguageRecap is a language learning companion built around material you already encounter in classes, tutor sessions, conversations or reading. Instead of following a fixed course, you build a personal vocabulary collection from your notes.
- Bring a few words or a short passage from what you learned.
- Review the suggested vocabulary and translations before saving.
- Return for short recaps scheduled with spaced repetition.
Vocabulary review supports English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Latvian, Swedish. Features vary by language; the public demo shows an Italian learning workspace.
What it does not replace
LanguageRecap is not a complete beginner-to-fluency course, a live tutor or a substitute for speaking and listening practice. Choose it when remembering your own vocabulary is the gap in your routine, rather than expecting one app to cover every skill.
Can I use it with Duolingo?
Yes. Keep your course app for structured study and add words you want to remember to LanguageRecap yourself. There is no automatic Duolingo import or account integration. Read our guide to LanguageRecap as a Duolingo alternative or companion for the distinction.
What language apps cost
Course apps usually sell monthly or annual subscriptions, while live tutoring is priced per hour. Anki is free on desktop and Android, with a paid one-time iOS app. LanguageRecap keeps review free and charges only for import volume and teaching tools.
